As the country entered lockdown in 2020, the York Early Music Festival was on the brink of launching its full printed campaign. With materials ready for delivery, everything changed overnight.

The theme Method & Madness—originally inspired by the contrasts in early music—suddenly took on new meaning. In response, we acted quickly to adapt the festival for its first-ever online edition.

We repurposed the existing identity and artwork for digital use, redesigned schedules and communications, and supported the team in shifting to an entirely virtual format. While much of the physical rollout was halted, the bold identity remained central—bridging the planned and the unexpected.

It was a rapid pivot in challenging circumstances, but one that helped set the stage for the online successes of future festivals.
